Physical Education Lead – Kate Brierley

‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect’. The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that: ‘all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities; lead healthy, active lives’.

Our Lady Immaculate Primary aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

Curriculum

Based on the National Curriculum we plan skills and provision across the school. Our Sports Coaches work closely with teaching staff and children each week to develop skills and broaden experiences.  We have also subscribed to ‘Get Set 4 PE’, a programme of work designed to enable teachers to feel confident in teaching this fantastic subject.

We are delighted to announced that we have been awarded the Key Stage 1 Essex Activity Mark 2022.  This Mark recognises excellence in P.E. and School Sports at Key Stage 1.  We are also thrilled to say that prior to Covid-19,  we  achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2018/19 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Our sporting achievements this year include:

  • District Sports: Years 3-6 coming 3rd in our pool with many children placing in their races.
  • Indoor Athletics: Year 4 Superstars.
  • Mid-Essex Cheer Leading Competition, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
  • Netball : Hi 5 Netball Tournament, 1st Place in our Small Schools League Pool
  • Cricket: Year 2 3 Tees.
  • Mini Games: Year 2 participated enthusiastically.
  • Boccia, Archery and Kurling: Variety of children from KS2 participated.
  • Teddy ‘Lympics: 4 Children from Year 1.
  • Smash Festival: 4 Children from Year 1. Came 1st in one area.

All children have embraced the sports on offer this academic year and this award recognises the hard work put in by all within our school to support the teaching of physical education.

Apart from the skills and games/sports experiences that the children receive, a massive impact of our provision is on the personal development of each child in terms of confidence, self-esteem, resilience and teamwork.

Every year we hold Sports Day for the children. The events are arranged on a circuit basis to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate in all events, such as an obstacle course. In the afternoon, there are track events for each class and some involve the relay race with a baton.

Year 4-6 have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons once a week for a term. These lessons take place at the local swimming centre. Regular testing takes place and children are awarded with certificates to motivate and reward progress. All of the teaching staff at the centre hold teaching, first aid and lifeguard qualifications. The teachers share our philosophy and values towards teaching; meet the standards that we demand and ensure our children make good progress. The classes are split into groups so that children swim in ability groups.

Congratulations Year 5 on coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Mid-Essex Cheerleading competition! Click on the photo to see them in action.
